Abstract | This report is presented in three parts. Part 1 consists of synopses of the child care situation in 13 countries. For each country, the child care environment, including the philosophy and historical background of child care, appropriate legislation, and types of child care services provided, are discussed. School-age child care programs for younger and older children are itemized and their characteristics described. The countries represented are Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, the German Democratic Republic, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Part 2 of the report synthesizes the information presented in Part 1 under four topics: (1) the role of government in the development of quality child care services; (2) the role of economics in parents' choices of child care; (3) the adaptability of international child care models to Canada; and (4) a review of research. Part 3 is comprised of an annotated bibliography divided into nine subject headings: (1) International, containing 28 items; (2) Guidelines and How-To Manuals, 11 items; (3) Special Needs, 4 items; (4) Research Reviews, 5 items Research Studies, 61 items; (5) Government Documents, 38 items; (6) Policy, 31 items; (7) Unlicensed Care, 7 items; and (8) Bibliographies and Literature Reviews, 8 items.
