AbstractAn evaluation of Manitoba's French immersion programs at the levels of grades 3, 6, and 9 focused on program effectiveness in teaching listening comprehension and speech skills. The results for grade 9 are presented here. The first section describes the framework of the immersion curriculum and the listening and oral skills targeted in it. The second section outlines the study's design, including the evaluation instrument used, its pilot testing, sampling, data collection, evaluators, scoring, and evaluation criteria. The third section presents results and interpretation, and the final section offers conclusions and 11 recommendations for program design, classroom implementation, and program administration. Results indicate that the majority of the objectives chosen for evaluation were met satisfactorily. Communication objectives were better attained than functional objectives, and achievement was especially high in "identifying that which provides clues about the speaker." Deficiencies were still observed in the area of syntax when speaking skills were evaluated. The evaluation instrument is appended. (MSE)
