AbstractA framework is proposed for describing the underlying dimensions of different styles that principals have as facilitators of change. A measure, the Change Facilitator Style Questionnaire, was developed to assess these dimensions and change facilitator styles. A review of the literature suggested an organizing framework of the following dimensions: (1) concern for people; (2) organizational efficiency; and (3) strategic sense. Two poles were determined for each dimension. A six-point Likert-type scale was designed for teacher assessment of each item, and 12 to 14 items were developed for each pole of each dimension. In the fall of 1987, field test packets were prepared or distributed in English and Dutch versions. In all, 679 responses representing 46 schools were received in the United States, with local rates of response varying from 95% to 36%. The field test confirmed the usefulness of the structure, and items tended to have consistency within each cluster. The next steps in the development of the measure will be to refine the scoring system, conduct a validity study, and review the Dutch field study. Two figures describe the styles and dimensions.
