| Abstract | This curriculum unit uses the U.S. policy options in the Middle East following the Persian Gulf War as the focal point for discussing present and future policy goals. The range of views presented about postwar policy in the Middle East reflects differences in underlying beliefs about the proper role of the United States in the world and about the suitable conduct of U.S. policy in the Persian Gulf region. The four options presented are: (1) the U.S. as a regional superpower; (2) the U.S. creates a military balance of power in the region; (3) the U.S. promotes regional and global cooperation on Middle East security; and (4) the U.S. minimizes its role in the Middle East. The four options are intended to provide a starting point for discussing and thinking with others about some of the choices that the nation will have to make in the future. A sample lesson plan is included as well as worksheet activities. The materials are designed for high school social studies classes such as global studies or civics. (DB) |
