AbstractSeven voluntary organizations in Canada looked at the literacy needs of the people who used their services. The Canadian Home and School and Parent-Teacher Federation began an 18-month pilot project focusing on "Literacy in the Information Age." It sponsored literacy exchanges in neighborhoods across Canada. The Canadian Child Welfare Association looked for ways to improve literacy opportunities for young people in the care of the child welfare system. It studied their literacy needs and identified the challenges, limitations, and barriers they faced. The Youth in Care Network documented the experiences of youth in the Canadian child welfare system and those who have become involved in the criminal justice system. The YMCA Canada offered literacy upgrading and also helped people improve their literacy skills in its other programs. The Salvation Army used computers in a pilot project to help homeless people, Native Canadians, new immigrants, single parents on social assistance, and recovering drug and alcohol abusers learn to read. The John Howard Society of Canada looked at how Canada's correctional institutions deal with illiteracy among offender populations and reviewed its literacy programs for adults who had been in trouble with the law. One Voice--The Canadian Seniors Network explored programs and services for elderly people to find out what assistance is available to illiterate seniors. (The booklet contains both French and English language versions.) (YLB)
