AbstractFor 3 years, the teachers, administrators, board of education members, and community representatives of San Diego, California, have been working on defining, developing, and implementing restructuring plans at approximately 50 schools. This paper documents and analyzes the development of a new middle school, O'Farrell Community School: Center for Advanced Academic Studies, from January 1988 through June 1990. O'Farrell embraces restructuring principles and believes that all children can and will learn from the same high-level, college preparatory curriculum. O'Farrell will open in fall 1990 with a seventh-grade class of 350 students and will feature a new governance model, curriculum, and instruction responding to early teens' academic, social, and emotional needs. In September 1991, the school will expand to a full 6-7-8 middle school with an estimated 1,200 students. The school is divided into three "educational families" that will be offered the same interdisciplinary program during a 4-hour "core" block combining language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. The program also includes a community service component, art, music, industrial arts, and physical education. All students will have a teacher/advocate and meet in an advocacy group daily. Emerging issues and concerns about the planning process and suggestions for future directions are discussed. (MLH)
