AbstractMalvern County (New Zealand) farmers (110 of a sample of 118) were interviewed in 1988 to investigate their farming techniques and methods. Questions were asked about educational background, current management practices, and training for younger farmers. The 93 percent response achieved reduced the possibility of sampling error within the survey area. Answers to questions relating to management showed the extent to which certain practices are carried out by local farmers. The survey showed that: (1) few new farmers undergo formal job training; (2) fewer than one-third of farmers seek advice directly from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries; (3) farmers have little time to spend in off-farm training; (4) most farmers rely on other farmers for advice; (5) farmers prefer small group learning; (6) local knowledge, hard work, and working with little supervision are more important characteristics for farmers than trade or university qualifications; (7) sheep and cropping farmers discourage their children from a farming career; and (8) more farming women than men have received tertiary training. The survey analysis shows a direct relationship between length of schooling and the extent to which management practices are carried out.
