Abstract	The nuclear era has produced a horrifying possibility never before existent in human history: the world humanity and civilizations can be destroyed. It is incumbent upon the peoples of the world, and especially those of the United States and Soviet Union, to grasp the enormous and profound consequences of nuclear warfare. The emergence of Mikhail Gorbachev as the leader of the Soviet Union appears to offer an authentic opportunity for the United States to fundamentally alter relations with the Soviets, and thus to reduce the nuclear danger. This essay examines the history of U.S.-Soviet relations; ways in which Gorbachev has moved beyond previous Soviet leaders in both ideas and actions; and what the United States can do to aid major changes in Soviet behavior. It also offers guidelines for coexistence between the superpowers based upon a book entitled "U.S.-Soviet Security Cooperation: Achievements, Failures, and Lessons" (A. L. George; P. J. Farley; A. Dallin) and suggests long-term strategies for influencing Soviet policy even after Gorbachev is no longer in power. A 58-item list of references is included. (DB)
