Abstract | This publication is a guide to Wisconsin's 40-hour high school course for assistant child care teachers. A total of 11 units describe: (1) the child care industry and the services it provides; (2) the arrangement of space and provision of equipment; (3) children's development from birth through 8 years of age; (4) techniques for interacting appropriately with children; and (5) the importance of developmentally appropriate classroom activities, safety, health, first aid, proper nutrition, positive interpersonal relationships, work with children, and professional development. Each unit consists of: (1) an overview including a unit goal and unit objectives; (2) a content and subject matter section designed to serve as a reference for teachers; (3) descriptive material detailing activities for each content section; (4) handouts for students; and (5) lists of resources for each unit. Teachers may not have enough time to use all the activities listed. Appendices offer background information; a list of skills and abilities required for assistant child care teachers; a list of important competencies of assistant child care teachers; and a bibliography with 100 citations of books, brochures, reports, resource guides, and video cassettes.
