Abstract	As part of a Unesco study of its member states, this case study reviews Sri Lanka's services for the education of disabled persons. The case study reports on the establishment of the Special Education Unit at the Ministry of Education in 1971, at which time the government undertook direct responsibility for providing educational opportunities for handicapped children. Progress in the provision of educational opportunities is documented by the increasing number of special school and integrated education programs. Integration of handicapped children with normal children in the same school setting is regarded as the most important contribution to normal living. The case study focuses on special education policy, legislation, administration/organization, special education provision, finance, research and development, and priorities. (JDD)
