AbstractA study tested a model of college faculty socialization. Using a critical-career-events framework, the model shows how the experiencing of critical career events affects individuals' judgments of their self-efficacy, which in turn affects their scholarly productivity. Seven critical-career-event categories (early career focus, mentoring, honors and awards, prestige, exposure, growth opportunity, and employing environment) were identified as independent variables, and 126 associate professors at one research institution were surveyed concerning their scholarly productivity, beliefs about their ability to carry out specific scholarly academic tasks, and specific experience with each category of critical career events. The study did not result in conclusive evidence that critical career events and self-esteem directly influence development of self-efficacy or achievement but did suggest that growth opportunities and self-efficacy were positively correlated with overall achievement. It is concluded that the process of scholarly career development needs to be better understood and that this understanding may lead to enhancement of appropriate interventions. Includes 14 references. (MSE)
