| Abstract | This review of the literature on supported employment for individuals with severe disabilities begins by outlining two Federal definitions of supported employment and noting their similarities. Literature on approaches to supported employment is examined, focusing on individual jobs at distributed or scattered sites, enclaves, mobile crews, and benchwork. A table compares the four models, analyzing the organizational strategy, number of workers per job site, cost, intensity of support, training, supervision, implementation issues, wages, integration, other employment benefits, success in serving persons with the most severe disabilities, and success in overcoming environmental constraints to employment. Barriers to supported employment are also explored, such as attitudes, job performance, cost, benefit reductions, and jobs availability. A 21-item bibliography completes the document. (JDD) |
