Abstract | The large section approach to speech communication instruction can be viewed as an opportunity rather than a detriment to effective communication education. Instructional strategies should be considered and applied appropriately to this ever-increasing instructional format. A number of principles may be generated which will lead to effectiveness in the large speech communication course and to student and instructor satisfaction. The following recommendations are suggestive of a broader view of the larger section than simply treating it as a lecture: (1) use active participation in learning; (2) create a supportive climate; (3) reward positive behavior; (4) select a competent communicator as the instructor; (5) utilize multiple-channel instruction; (6) provide as many opportunities for feedback as possible; and (7) build unity and cohesiveness among members of the class.
