AbstractThis book examines ways to improve the writing skills of older elementary school students and junior high school students, with particular emphasis on grammatical errors concerning anaphora, connectors, and information gapping. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the common syntactic errors which regularly appear in essays written by pupils of 10 to 14 years of age. Chapters 3 and 4 examine the modes of instruction developed to help resolve the above-mentioned problems. Chapter 5 assesses which of the possible curricula is the most effective in reducing these writing problems; chapters 6 and 7 describe and discuss the research design and results and methods of evaluation and argue that, based on the evidence, grammar instruction has no positive effects on writing skills. (Two figures and 25 tables of data are included; seven appendixes and 170 references are attached.) (KEH)
