AbstractThe results of a survey of rural public libraries in Pennsylvania are reported in narrative form, supplemented with tables and graphs. The report is based on the responses of 1,053 library users of 124 rural libraries (out of a sample of 131). Concerned with the users' perceptions of the public library, the first section presents data on reasons for using the library, frequency of library use, ratings of library services, differences in information needs based on gender of library patrons, and the willingness of patrons to pay for library services. The second section provides data on the top six daily information requirements of patrons and the extent to which the library meets them, the effect of community involvement on information needs, and the use of information sources other than the library. The third section considers the role of the rural public library in supporting community development efforts. Recommendations outlined in the fourth section highlight the importance of the library making available information about local communities, informing the public about library resources and services in a more systematic fashion, nurturing the support of community opinion leaders, and encouraging women--as a lobbying group--to support the library before municipal authorities responsible for library funding. Also recommended are an examination of other players in the infrastructure of information in Pennsylvania and of the process by which the general public goes about locating information and deciding on alternative resources.
