Abstract | The booklet is designed to provide awareness training for the general public on the relationship between persons with disabilities and other members of society. The booklet is divided into six sections concerning persons who are mentally ill, hearing impaired, mentally retarded, mobility impaired, visually impaired, or have epilepsy. Background information gives a brief overview of the characteristics and ramifications of each disability. The booklet also establishes guidelines on how to interact with persons with each disability. For example, the guidelines recommend that when a person with mental retardation is encountered, "acknowledge any display of curiosity or question" and "use average speech and a non-threatening attitude." When encountering a person with mental illness the booklet suggests "try to learn something about the individual before you make contact" and "talk about everyday things in a calm, confident tone of voice." A bibliography of 12 recommended readings is attached. (JDD) |
