Abstract | This handbook was written to help faculty and staff of postsecondary programs better understand students with disabilities and make academic accommodations for them. The handbook suggests adjustments which can be made in the classroom environment or in teaching styles to accommodate specialized needs without affecting academic integrity. Section I outlines general considerations important in assisting students with disabilities to meet their educational goals. Section II discusses characteristics, educational implications, and accommodations for a variety of disabilities, including specific learning disability, hearing impairment, visual impairment, seizure disorder, motor impairment, and psychological disorders. Section III describes handicapped persons' rights under Public Law 93-112, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and Section IV lists suggestions for helping all students to succeed in the classroom. A list of readings is appended. (JDD) |
