AbstractA study investigated whether there was a correspondence between the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are required to enter into employment and those that are provided by nonformal vocational training programs in the building trades in Zimbabwe. Two types of employment were considered. The first type was employment in industry achieved through passing a trade test in the building trades. The second type of employment was self-reliance in the form of either self-employment or cooperative activities in the building trades. Information was collected from officials at the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Cooperative Development and Women's Affairs, and from principals, instructors, and trainees at three training centers. Interviews, questionnaires, and documents were used in collecting the information. The results of the study indicated that the requirements to pass a trade test or enter into self-reliance activities successfully were very wide. None of the training programs studied was found to provide the whole range of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required. Two of the centers provided more of them than the third center.
