AbstractCertification requirements for trade and industrial (T&I) education are unique because (1) the majority of laboratory teachers lack the baccalaureate degree and (2) the teaching content and methodology of T&I education programs vary markedly from other vocational education programs. As a consequence, the Primary concern of T&I certification is centered around various preemployment conditions that differ from those typically required of other vocational education teachers. A study of T&I requirements from 53 states and territories was conducted using data collected from printed certification regulations. The data were categorized as preemployment requirements, occupational experience requirements, certification requirements, and renewal requirements. From the data, comparative tables were developed for requirements in the areas of work experience, recency of work experience, occupational skills evaluation, basic skills evaluation, preemployment requirements, new teacher orientation courses, degree completion, certificate levels and renewal periods, highest level for full certification, and courses needed for initial and later levels of certification. The study found that only two states required bachelor's degrees for initial certification, whereas 10 states required the degree for full certification. The other 41 states granted full certification at less than degree level. (Following the brief study report and 21 references, the bulk of the document consists of extensive state-by-state comparative tables.) (Author/KC)
