Abstract | The interview process in qualitative research is discussed, based on the experiences of the two participants in a series of life-story interviews. The interviews were held during a pilot study for a doctoral project, and this account of the process is presented from the dual perspectives of the researcher-interviewer and of the interviewee, respectively. Both participants were female educational administrators. In the course of the pilot study, the participants met for a series of seven interviews, each lasting approximately 1 hour. The first six interviews occurred over a 3-week period. A key element of the interview process involved the charting of decision points in the life history. A decision flowchart was developed depicting the sequence of activities and choices that the interviewee had related. The chart was present at each session. The seventh interview occurred 2 months after the sixth interview. During the intervening period, the researcher analyzed the tapes and drafted a 4,000-word biography. This final validation interview was also a time for the two participants to discuss more fully their experiences as participants in the pilot study. Embedded in these reflections are technical and ethical issues related to life-story interviewing. Selected aspects of experiences in six initial interviews, supplemented by tapes, field notes, journal entries, a biography, and recollections, are the focus of the inquiry. (TJH) |
