AbstractPresented is a discussion of an intercultural orientation seminar for foreign and U.S. university students at Colorado State University. This 1-day retreat is held each semester at a lodge in the Rocky Mountains. It is designed to bring together the students and community people to experience an international environment where the goal is to explore each other's cultures and become acquainted. The seminar, known as "A Day in the Mountains," concentrates on feelings attitudes, and the understanding and acceptance of differences in cultures. This is a low-cost-per-person project, almost self-supporting, with a minimal amount of outside funding. Some of the problems facing other types of orientation programs which this program is designed to overcome are information overload, lack of time, perceived lack of relevance, continuing learning experience, and lack of money. This program is replicable in a college or university with foreign students if a supportive office staff exists who believe in the value of the experience. Appended are: a schedule for the all-day seminar; directions for group leaders; additional suggestions from previous evaluation sessions; information on exploring cultural differences; a cultural values worksheet; a questionnaire on cultural assumptions and values affecting interpersonal relationships; a paper on the intercultural adjustment cycle; and common slang used in the United States.
