| Abstract | As a proportion of the labor force or of professional workers, Asian-Americans have always been under represented as teachers in elementary and secondary schools. While the number of Asians going to college and graduating is much higher than the norm for the whole population, four variables are of particular importance in explaining the shortage of Asians in precollege teaching: cultural and language barriers, occupational orientation, immigration status, and racial discrimination. Higher educational attainment and achievement in science and mathematics help Asian college graduates obtain jobs with higher pay and greater prestige than teaching. This paper discusses those variables in the light of career choices by Asian-Americans, pointing out the differences between the cultural attitudes among minority groups and explaining why these attitudes influence Asians to enter vocational fields other than teaching. Recommendations are made for attracting minority students to teaching. Data gathered in the study are displayed in tables and graphs. Extensive references are included.(JD) |
