Abstract | This study examines the changes that have occurred in the ways colleges and universities in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) seek to prepare teachers. Particular focus is on the effects of state policies and on the role of college and university leaders in bringing about change. The study describes and explains changes in the way prospective teachers are readied for teaching, but does not assess the value or consequences of those changes. Two types of questionnaires were sent to all 189 four-year public colleges and universities in the 15 states that comprise the membership of the SREB, and to 56 private colleges and universities in these states that graduate significant numbers of certified teachers. The first questionnaire dealt with information about changes in the admission or retention standards, changes in curriculum, changes in philosophy or demographics, governance structures, and other information about the change process. A second questionnaire inquired into the role of the arts and sciences in the preparation of teachers. Key conditions contributing to effective change processes are analyzed and the role of educational institutions on changing teacher education and the formation of public policy is described. (JD) |
