Abstract | In 1987, the U.S. Economic Development Administration awarded a grant to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities to conceive, plan, and coordinate a series of regional conferences following their funding of the successful 1986 National Conference of Higher Education and Economic Development. The proceedings from these four regional conferences are presented. They served as forums for addressing the role of public colleges and universities in fostering economic development in their communities, regions, states, and the nation. Conference participants included college and university presidents, faculty members, corporate and association heads, and civic leaders. The conferences included more than 60 speeches, workshops, and panel discussions, and selected, edited excerpts from the conferences are presented. Four chapters look at the higher education and economic development of the midwest, the south, the northeast, and the west. Each section provides an overview of the conference, the agenda, and selected excerpts. The historical role of higher education in these areas is noted, and their responses to change are discussed (including human resources development, business development, technology transfer, and international relations and trade).
