Abstract | A major applied research project evaluated the effectiveness of a novel course, Offshore Survival Systems Training. The major course outcome that was evaluated was the increase in frequency with which offshore personnel correctly launched the covered powered survival craft on offshore drilling rigs. The evaluation methodology included the 628 written and performance pretest and posttest records of course graduates as well as 231 written and 63 performance retest scores gathered by supervisors on offshore installations. This method replaced the conventional, but costly evaluation of marine survival training by inquiry into casualties. The mean written posttest score was 95.07, and 100 percent of the students successfully launched the survival craft. At least three months after the training, the company-wide percentage of those who could still launch the craft was 77.8 percent. The mean written retest score was 88.01. The per capita cost of the course was $241, or excluding travel and per diem expenses, $71. The increase in successful launches from 10 to 77.8 percent and the increase in knowledge of marine survival from 50.28 to 88.01 were concrete benefits. Recommendations were that (1) all new employees should undergo this training and (2) the selection criteria for employee retention should include the posttest scores. A 69-item bibliography is included. The appendices provide the written retest and the instructions for the performance and the written retests. (YLB) |
