AbstractA constant interaction and interdependence exists between ecological and social systems. This paper recommends that teachers: (1) first focus students' attention on their cultural, natural, and social surroundings; (2) teach students the relationship between the school's and the community's social environments; (3) utilize community resources whenever possible; (4) create field-based learning laboratory sites, such as nature trails or activity areas; (5) reinforce what has been previously been learned; (6) maximize individual instruction through the use of learning packets; and (7) focus on fundamental concepts, knowledge, and skills. Students should be taught that people and nature must exist in harmony and in interlocking dependency. Global cultures can be compared in terms of: (1) behavior; (2) communication; (3) customs and traditions; (4) dress, food, and shelter; (5) geography and topography; (6) institutions; (7) social roles and status; (8) technology and tools; and (9) values. Structured learning environments, simulated experience environments, and students' inquiry through game-related activities can be used to encourage learning.
