Abstract | The first two years of a study of the development of bilingual language proficiency are reported in separate volumes. The core of the work during this period was the development of a model of language proficiency. Other related studies addressed topics such as the relationship between aspects of language proficiency and scoring methodology on proficiency tests; the role of native language transfer in some of the written production data gathered; the relationship between language use patterns, language attitudes, and proficiency in English and Portuguese in Toronto; and ethnographic aspects of a francophone school and a Chinese community. The development and extensive piloting of an observation instrument called COLT (Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching) designed to capture the communicative orientation of a variety of second language classrooms is also described in detail. Further project activities for years 3-5 are outlined. Extensive related materials appended to the first year report include papers on the specifications and use of a factor analysis model; proficiency tests developed by the project; report of a preliminary observation scheme; a questionnaire for 12th grade students of Portuguese background; and 3 conference reports. The separately bound appendices to the second year report include, among other project-related papers, a discussion of issues regarding coding speech data; the COLT observation scheme and teacher questionnaire; tests and questionnaires used in the Portuguese study, and a detailed account of the Chinese community/school study.
