| Abstract | The Workers' Educational Association (WEA) was founded in 1912 for the purpose of encouraging and supporting existing educational provision provided by the local authority, university, and other local educational institutions; working to stimulate and promote the interest of the working class in liberal arts studies; and making recommendations to the local authorities on matters pertaining to all forms of education. The WEA evolved a three-tier administrative structure--national, district, and branch. The foundations of the WEA in Bath, England, can be traced to the work of the Bath Centre of the Oxford University Extension Movement. It was hoped that a local WEA branch would attract more working class students into the extension program. The branch launched an extensive program of activities ranging from study groups, single lectures, visits, short courses, and a three-year tutorial class. After enduring the financial strains caused by World War II, the branch began an encouraging period of steady expansion, with the program setting new records nearly every year. Although not as successful in attracting educationally disadvantaged individuals as it would have liked, the Bath branch has continued to provide educational opportunities to workers through a partnership of full-time staff and part-time voluntary tutors from teaching and nonteaching backgrounds alike.
