AbstractA study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using a satellite delivery system to provide market information to farmers. The program delivered by satellite was Crop Market Prospects, a one-day conference that presents the market outlook for both crops and inputs, investigates the world grain situation, and provides a long-term outlook. The conference, beamed live via satellites to 15 centers, provided opportunity for feedback and questions through direct phone links. A spring questionnaire was followed up with a fall survey at the conclusion of harvest. Crop Marker Prospects serves farmers who operate considerably larger farms than the average Saskatchewan farmer, hence are likely to have a higher level of information needs. Results indicated that participants were generally satisfied with the program format. The information was useful in helping producers make decisions regarding types of crops to plant. Findings also indicated that expected income increased as a result of changes made due to information presented at the program. Producers moved away from traditional crops to other and specialty crops, due to low price forecasts for certain cereal crops. No relationships were identified between the level of usefulness of the program and participant characteristics of age, size of farm, or time spent farming. (The study instruments and a listing of resources are appended.) (YLB)
