AbstractThe graduate student survey, undertaken annually by the American Institute of Physics, monitors trends in the population of graduate students in physics and astronomy. Individuals are surveyed for information on their personal and educational characteristics and career goals. The report presents tabulated data from the survey, with analysis presented in narrative form. Information on physics students includes: student characteristics (sex, citizenship, physics study in high school, type of bachelor's and graduate institution, full-time or part-time status, source of support) of all graduate students, first-year students, and terminal masters and doctoral degree recipients; similar information on minority group students and in addition, data on full-time-equivalent years of graduate study, major subfields, and graduate degree recipients, as well as race category; student distribution by subfield, sources of support by sex and degree status, distribution in selected experimental or theoretical subfields, distribution by subfield and employment offers for doctorate recipients and terminal master's recipients, employment of doctoral graduates by citizenship, employment characteristics of master's recipients, use of training in potentially permanent employment, initial employment with potential permanence, and median salaries. Similar but less extensive information is provided for astronomy students. (MSE)
