Abstract | Institutional stature, its development and determination, and strategies for its enhancement in colleges and universities are discussed. Focus is on the fundamental dimensions of stature, how it is affected by the external environment, and what colleges can do to improve it. Chapters are as follow: "Definition and Dimensions of Stature" (higher education and public perception, what stature is, and what its dimensions are); "Changing Public Attitudes toward Higher Education" (societal conditions and public opinion, changing public attitudes and perceptions, psychological well-being and ill-being, and postulates derived from research); "Attributes of Academic Organization and Performance" (distinguishing characteristics of the academic organization and performance attributes);"Practices to Enhance Stature in Complex Organizations" (for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and principles for application to colleges and universities); "Organizing Colleges and Universities to Enhance Stature" (strategic assessment, allocation of resources, outcomes assessment and image management as leveraging strategies); and "Summary and Conclusions."
