AbstractThis handbook is intended as a guide and point of reference for improving equal opportunities for girls and boys at school. It contains many examples and suggestions for positive action for girls that are drawn from European experience. Focuses are the need to improve access to education and training opportunities as well as the more difficult task of changing attitudes. Four chapters each cover a different part of the education system. The two chapters on primary schools and secondary schools consider the roles and responsibilities of teachers, administrators, publishers of teaching materials, and parents. The chapter on transition from school to adult and working life offers suggestions for the roles and responsibilities of teachers/trainers, administrators, publishers of career education materials, counselors, and parents. Suggestions for teacher training are offered in the final chapter. Each chapter concludes with a list of references. (YLB)
