AbstractThe experiences of college graduates in the Philippines in obtaining employment were studied based on the responses of 1,284 students (out of a sample of 2,598). Findings on an earlier study--Higher Education and the Labour Market (HELMS I)--are summerized. For the current study (HELMS II), information is provided on: parental background, educational background of graduates, reasons for dropping out of college, reasons for taking longer than 4 years to complete college, assessment by students of the content of instruction, assessment of the method of instruction, the percentage of unemployed graduates, occupations of employed graduates, percentage of graduates who are employed in the public and private sectors, the distribution of graduates in public sector employment, employment by industrial classification, mean income of graduates by occupation, mean income by industrial classification, mean income by college type, and mean income by academic program. Economic conditions that affect employment are discussed, with attention to the gross national product of the Philippines, per capita income, unemployment, and inflation. Policy implications of the study findings are considered. (The questionnaire used in this study is appended). (SW)
