AbstractThis report presents data on the 1986 income and poverty status of families and persons from 60,500 households in the United States. Among the variables examined are the following: (1) race; (2) Hispanic origin; (3) sex; (4) age; (5) marital status; (6) residence; and (7) family status. The following highlights are included: (1) for the fourth consecutive year, median family income moved ahead of inflation. In 1986, the median income for families was $29,460, 4.2 percent higher than the 1985 median after adjusting for a 1.9 percent increase in consumer prices between 1985 and 1986; (2) since 1982, when the last economic recession ended, real median family income rose a total of 10.7 percent; (3) the median earnings of both men and women working year-round, full-time increased significantly between 1985 and 1986; (4) the number of persons below the poverty level was 32.4 million in 1986; (5) the poverty rate was 13.6 percent in 1986, compared with 14.0 in 1985; and (6) the number and percentage of persons in poverty have decreased since 1983. Data are presented on 31 tables and figures. Appendices provide definitions of terms used, and discuss the source and reliability of the estimates, and the problem of income underreporting. (BJV)
