Abstract | This student workbook aims to prepare deaf high school students for work by assisting them in the job search process. The book begins with an evaluation of the many reasons why people work, the steps involved in searching for a job, and a self-administered rating scale for job search readiness. A chapter on personalizing the job search focuses on self-analysis in such areas as school subjects, activities and hobbies, work activities, physical demands, working conditions, aptitudes, habits, personality characteristics, and values. Such self-analysis should lead to a personal career goal and a list of potential jobs. The following chapters describe how to: locate sources of employment information, develop a list of potential employers, develop a resume, write employment letters, complete application forms, and interview effectively. The final chapter deals with accepting the job and beginning work, explaining the importance of company policies and regulations, time cards, life insurance forms, and employer and employee responsibilities. The workbook contains self-evaluation forms, hypothetical situations for discussion, role playing activities, and other learning activities. An accompanying teacher's guide outlines course objectives, course requirements, and concepts to emphasize in classroom discussion of each workbook chapter. (JDD) |
