AbstractTo examine the effects of the language experience approach (LEA) on beginning reading achievement, a study analyzed five projects conducted as part of the United States Office of Education first grade studies and 32 additional studies comparing basal reading approaches to LEA. Using two methods of quantitative synthesis (vote-counting and meta-analysis), analyses indicated that, overall, LEA approaches and basal reader approaches were approximately equal in their effects, with the following exceptions: (1) there were indications that LEA approaches may have been more effective in kindergarten than in first grade; (2) LEA approaches appeared to produce stronger effects on measures of word recognition than on measures of reading comprehension; and (3) more recent studies showed a trend toward stronger effects for the basal reading program relative to LEA methods. Findings suggest that Language Experience has an important function early in the process of learning to read, but that as the child's needs shift, LEA becomes less effective.
