Abstract | In an effort to inform junior and senior high school students about mental illness, this document provides educators with an annotated bibliography of young adult fiction and a set of supporting activities. Included in the bibliography are nearly 100 current fiction titles, grouped according to the following topics: anorexia, drugs and alcohol, mental illness, and suicide. The nine educational activities consist of (1) "Booktalking" (guidelines for presenting an interesting conversation about a book); (2) "Displays and bibliographies"; (3) "'A Catcher in the Rye': The Use of a Classic" (a selection of study guides, activities, and tests developed by a classroom teacher to accompany reading of "The Catcher in the Rye"); (4) "Read Your Way to a Healthier Life" (an activity which requires students to read a fiction book with a health-related theme, conduct interviews, and create a bulletin board); (5) "Using Publisher Guides To Share Fiction Literature"; (6) "Fiction Forum" (guidelines for group discussions of fiction); (7) "A Comparison of Film and Literature" (a discussion activity which demonstrates to students that films often do not accurately portray authors' messages; (8) "Search for Self: Literature To Promote Positive Thinking" (a list of twenty-one books recommended as background reading for educators); and (9) "Interdisciplinary Programs." The document also contains a professional bibliography of 18 sources and a list of the addresses of 43 publishers. (ARH) |
