Abstract | New methods are proposed for teachers to increase the cultural knowledge of their students. Rather than emphasizing food, festivals, and famous faces from other lands, there should be an attempt to use culture in the classroom as content in the regular instruction of speaking, listening, writing, mathematics, reading, and science. Teaching suggestions are presented which were developed for use with bilingual classes, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, and mainstream classes. They can be adapted for elementary or secondary students. The materials and lessons are the following; (1) a timeline for Southeast Asian holidays; (2) a philosophy for bilingual/ESL curriculum; (3) a timeline and map for science lessons; (4) folk tales; (5) a guide for science journals; (6) guidelines for a drama in the social studies class; (7) information on literature and performing arts in other cultures; (8) thematic areas for math skill development; and (9) ideas for using Hmong handicrafts for language development.
