Abstract | A survey of all staff of the University of Queensland was conducted to gather: information on the participation of women in the university, particularly with regard to structural barriers and direct or indirect discriminatory practices that disadvantage women more than men; and information on opinions regarding the standing of women in the university. Four varieties of a questionnaire were sent to four groupings of university employees: academic staff, other research staff, general staff, and maintenance and service staff. Of the sample of 3,633 persons, 2,744 questionnaires were returned, representing a 75% response rate. Survey results and recommendations to the university based on the findings are presented in the following sections: (1) "Scope, Methodology and Staff Survey"; (2) "Concepts and Definitions"; (3) "Attitudes--the Social Climate of the University"; (4) "Demography--Staff and Students in the University"; (5) "Women in Decision-Making Structures"; (6) "General Staff"; (7) "Academic and Research Staff"; (8) "Indirect Barriers--the Dual Role, Child Care Conditions of Service"; (9) "Women's Studies, Sexism in Teaching and Sexism in Language"; and (10) "Policies for Change." Three appendices are provided: a summary of the recommendations to the university and the current status of each, the policies for handling sexual harassment at the university, and tables of demographic data on the university. Ninety references are included. (KM) |
