Abstract | Written to accompany the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Level III reading skills workbook of the PATHWAYS Curriculum, this teacher's guide contains brief explanations of the various skills presented in the workbook, suggested teaching strategies, answers to workbook exercises, and a list of available commercial materials that may be used to supplement the exercises. Lessons are grouped under the unit topics of word analysis, vocabulary, comprehension, and study skills. Units contain a total of 15 lessons, each addressing a specific skill such as root words, prefixes and suffixes, compound words, context clues, drawing conclusions, identifying cause and effect, use of the dictionary, and map and graph reading. The teaching strategies for each lesson include ways to clarify information for students, provide additional practice, and facilitate participation in group activities. The preface describes the organization of the series of six ABE reading and writing workbooks stressing that the books provide a sequential, systematic approach to adult basic education and contain material based on the culture of Indian tribes of the Southwest.
