Abstract | This journal issue highlights a style of U.S. art and literature generally referred to as regionalism and focuses on Iowa's historical role in its development. Compiled to encourage student understanding about how people lived in the Midwest during the 1920s and 1930s, the depression years are featured through presentations; the study of the painting, "American Gothic," and related literature of that period. Historical events are outlined to help students understand and appreciate the impact of regionalist art. Suggestions for interpreting paintings and constructing dioramas of the time period are provided. Articles are included which detail the life of Iowa's regionalist artist Grant Wood and the importance of the Stone City Art Colony in the historical development of New Deal Art Programs. (JHP) |
