| Abstract | This report reviews the national educational reform movement of the 1980's, with particular attention directed to seven states: California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington. The first chapter provides background information on the educational reform movement. The second chapter focuses on the reform activities taking place in the above seven states. The third chapter discusses educational reform actions taking place in the areas of student achievement; the education profession; school governance, structure, and finance; innovation; and implementation and oversight. The final chapter discusses the possible futures of educational reform, and concludes that the educational reform movement was a more informed effort than is usually realized, but there remains an important state government need for applied research assistance to guide policy decisions. A summary of the national reports and an eight-page list of additional reading references are appended. (Author/CB) |
