AbstractA study of the behavior of children working on mathematics drill and practice on one of four Israeli computer-assisted instruction (CAI) systems--Mashov, Semel, Tapuach 1 and 3, or Toam 2--was carried out via observations in a sample of 21 computer rooms throughout Israel, and in a computer room operated by research staff. These observations focused on: (1) broad activities of pupils such as engagement with the computer, with the operator, with another pupil, or with auxiliary material; (2) problem content and pupil-computer interactions during a single problem; and (3) children having difficulties, which involved unstructured conversation between the students and the observer. It was found that the systems were well run and efficiently utilized, and that students tended to work diligently and were satisfied with their computer room experiences. Nevertheless, programs could be improved by reducing opportunities for non-constructive guessing and providing response-specific feedback. A list of 26 references is provided, as well as lists of both Hebrew (bibliographic citations are in English) and English publications of the National Council of Jewish Women Research Institute for Innovation in Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. An abstract of this report is provided in both Hebrew and in English. (Author/MES)
