| Abstract | The use of performance appraisal (PA) as part of a performance management system at the college level is discussed, and a process model to implement PA through staff development is presented. Through PA, the supervisor and employee develop a framework for identifying job duties and responsibilities, goals and objectives, and performance measures. The PA process involves a formal communication between supervisor and the employee in which expectations are clarified. The proposed PA implementation model is based on an employee growth and development approach that considers change as a process and utilizes an adult education approach to change implementation. PA is a process of helping others learn and develop at work through participation and collaboration in an atmosphere of mutual respect and critical reflection. The contextual variables of individual institutions are discussed. The following elements of a PA implementation model are considered: design, development, installation, training, pilot testing, maintenance, and evaluation. Research evidence supporting the model is summarized, and ways to enhance the PA implementation process are considered. A four-page bibliography is included. (SW) |
