AbstractGirls are only one of several groups that governments in Australia, as in other parts of the world, have recognized as suffering educational disadvantage. The problems of other groups are clear-cut and appropriate action plainly indicated. But in the case of girls, the causes are far more complex, entrenched in society, and education systems have served only to immobilize girls in their traditional roles. Articles in this issue address some of these issues, each dealing with a different aspect of discrimination. They are: "Taking Girls''Disadvantage Seriously'" (Sandra Taylor); "Girls and Mathematics" (Marjorie Carss); "Girls, Sport, and Physical Education" (Viki Rutter); "Against the Laws of Nature" (Reet Howell); "Girls' Needs at Babinda" (Mary Clarke); "Schools, Girls, and Special Needs" (Bernadette Roberts, et al.); "Self-Concept and Role Models" (Claire Stapleton); "Curriculum and the Small Rural School" (Matthew Glen); "Teachers Evaluating Teachers" (Jim Lawson); and "Keeping Innovation Going" (Howard Thomas).
