AbstractA report on pharmacy education in Florida and the United States and on Florida labor supply is presented. Overviews of the pharmacy profession and pharmacy education are also given, including the areas of history, careers, licensure, salaries, accreditation, curriculum, enrollment, degrees awarded, and tuition and fees. Information on the colleges of pharmacy at Florida A & M University and the University of Florida is presented, with attention to curricula, enrollment, degrees, educational facilities, minority access and retention, faculty, and research. Recommendations include: enrollment should not be reduced in the two state colleges of pharmacy, since there is a shortage of pharmacists in Florida; the Board of Regents should maintain both the five-year baccalaureate degree and the six-year doctor of pharmacy degree programs; and, at its next program review, the Regents should reassess pharmacy practice needs and state manpower needs to consider whether the five-year baccalaureate degree should be retained as preparation for entry-to-practice. Access for students to pharmacy education in Southeast Florida and minority access to pharmacy education are also addressed. A 1986 pharmacy inventory and questionnaire are appended. (SW)
