Abstract | Representatives from major institutions teaching African languages convened to discuss the design of African language textbooks and to propose guidelines for the writing of new textbooks and evaluation of existing ones. Conference papers include: "Language Acquisition Theory and Materials Construction" (Stephen Krashen); "The Structures of Verbal Meaning" (Janet K. Swaffer); "How Should We Teach Hausa" (Russell G. Schuh); "Considerations for Self-Instructional Language Material for Threshold Level Acquisition" (Ivan R. Dihoff); "Language as Communication: The Socio-Cultural Aspect of Language Teaching" (Joan Maw); "Students' Wants and Needs for Grammar Instruction" (Carol Myers Scotton); "On Categorizing Language Courses: Reconciling Language Characteristics and Performance Expectations" (Patrick R. Bennett, Ann Biersteker); "African Language Recorded Materials Assessment at the University of Wisconsin, Madison" (Hazel Carter); "Reviewing Swahili Textbooks" (Ann Biersteker); "Reviewing Berber Courses" (Patrick R.
