AbstractThe forms of coordination between general and vocational education, including the vocationalization of education, have only become a general issue of school policy during the postwar years. Vocationalization can occur at different levels, and includes making individuals aware of their future roles in the world of work, informing individuals about general characteristics of economic activity and specific characteristics of different occupational fields, training students to perform special tasks, providing specialized and supplementary job training, and updating individuals with information about new and changing occupations. When viewed in the context of educational organization, vocationalization becomes a question of educational differentiation and integration. Efforts to vocationalize education have been undertaken in compulsory, postcompulsory, and lifelong learning situations. The segregation of general and vocational education before 1971 was the result of various social, educational, and financial factors. With the advent of integrated upper-secondary schools, vocational education was given a new content and organization in which students following a vocational course of study were given a broader general education than previously and more scope was given to the so-called general subjects. The future development of the employment sector will do a great deal to determine the future structure and content of education. (MN)
