| Abstract | Recommendations for improving the search, selection, and negotiation for a college president (the term president is used to represent an institution's chief executive officer) are offered, and the social responsibilities of the president are briefly addressed. Aspects of the search that may present problems include: determining institutional needs, the active search, search committee composition and organization, board oversight, communications, confidentiality, and assessment of finalists. Recommendations are as follows: assess college and community needs, decide to spend the money, determine whether outside help is needed, establish a reasonable time frame, establish good relations with the media, actively seek a diverse pool of candidates, seek realistic qualifications, question automatic assumptions, protect the integrity of the process, emphasize thorough and timely communication, clarify expectations of the nominations process, reconsider the use of letters of recommendation, conduct thorough background checks on final candidates, negotiate terms of employment precisely, announce the appointment privately before going public, and plan and assist in the transition.
