AbstractA discussion of the functional approach to second language teaching looks at its theoretical foundations and their relationship to communicative language instruction. It locates the origins of the functional approach in early twentieth-century British linguistics and the three key concepts of context of situation, language function, and meaning potential. It examines the applications of systemic theory and relates them to the development of the notional syllabus and accompanying materials. The discussion concludes with an examination of the viability of functional materials in promoting communicative competence. Five sample exercises and 33 references are included. (MSE)
